KS1 Art & Design
Intent
With creativity at its heart, our art and design curriculum aims to inspire pupils and develops their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Pupils develop their skills in drawing, painting and sculpture to capture their ideas, experiences and imagination. They explore techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. Children learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers.
Knowledge and Key Skills Progression Grid:
ART & DESIGN – EYFS & KS1 Knowledge and Key Skills – updated September 2023
Implementation
Pupils in Nursery to Year Two complete an art project across the year with a focus on 5 key areas of art:
- Abstract Art (art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect)
- Impressionism (a style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience – depicts light on an object)
- Pointillism (an impressionist style of painting using small dots)
- Structures (a study of art using shapes and line drawings)
- Designers
Within the projects, children work through seven stages:
- Knowledge – recalling relevant prior knowledge about key artists and styles
- Comprehension – understanding new skills and knowledge learnt by appreciating and commenting on pieces of art
- Application, Analysis and Synthesis – using and applying knowledge and new skills in a variety of creative ways
- Evaluation and Creation – creating their own art
Impact
By the end of Key Stage One most children:
- Choose and use three different grades of pencil when drawing.
- Use charcoal, pencil and pastel to create art.
- Use a viewfinder to focus on a specific part of an artefact before drawing it.
- Mix paint to create all the secondary colours, brown paint, tints with paint by adding white and creating tones with paint by adding black.
- Create a printed piece of art by pressing, rolling, rubbing and stamping.
- Make a clay pot and join two clay finger pots together.
- Use different effects within an IT paint package.
- Suggest how artists have used colour, pattern and shape.
- Create a piece of art in response to the work of another artist
