KS1 Design & Technology
Intent
Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of designing and making. Pupils are taught to design, make and evaluate a range of models and products.
Key Skills and Knowledge Progression Grid:
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY – EYFS & KS1 Knowledge and Key Skills – updated January 24
Implementation
In Key Stage One, pupils follow KAPOW Schemes of Learning. Pupils develop and apply their early design and make skills, acquired in the Early Years Foundation Stage, to complete design and make projects across the academic year, within four schemes of learning:
- food technology
- textiles
- mechanisms
- structures
Kapow Design Technology aims to inspire pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation, and evaluation. Children are encouraged to develop confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their work and the work of others. Our Design Technology curriculum outlines the three main stages of the design process, design, make and evaluate. Each stage is underpinned by technical knowledge which encompasses the understanding required for each strand. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work including practical hands-on, computer-based and inventive tasks. Lessons are engaging and appeal to all children.

Impact
By the end of Key Stage One most children:
Design:
- Design purposeful, functional, appealing products for myself and others based on design criteria.
- Generate, develop, model and communicate ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate, via computing.
Make
- Select and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks (for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing).
- Select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their characteristics.
- Sew and join fabric using a running stitch.
Technical Knowledge
- Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable.
- Explore and use mechanisms [for example, levers, sliders, wheels and axles], in products.
- Understand where food comes from.
- Thread a needle, independently.
Evaluate
- Explore and evaluate a range of existing products.
- Evaluate own ideas and the strength, stiffness and stability of own structures.
Cooking and Nutrition
- Know what makes a balanced diet.
- Taste test different food combinations.
