KS1 History

Intent

The curriculum focusses on children learning about historical changes within living memory and events beyond living memory that are significant locally, nationally or globally e.g. The Great Fire of London. They also research the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements e.g. Queen Victoria.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to ensure children learn about people and events in the past that are significant in Great Lumley, County Durham, the North East of England and nationally.

In Year One children research significant people from the past such as Mary Anning and compare their achievements to modern day local palaeontologists Angela Milner, from Gosforth.  They research and sequence the life events of local heroin Grace Darling, and the history of the RNLI, linking to our local coastline.  In Year Two, pupils research the achievements of Queen Victoria, in chronological order.  They research sequence the events of the Lumley 1819 Colliery Disaster and the life of Hannah Porter – female miner from Lumley.  Children are given the opportunity to research, compare and contrast similar historical events; the Great Fire of Newcastle and the Great Fire of London.

Children are supported in their historical enquiry through the use of high quality texts, websites and resources.  An emphasis is placed upon using primary and secondary sources as a research tool, utilising our loan scheme ‘Boxes of Delight’ provided by the local Discovery Museum in Newcastle, educational visits and visitors to school.
