KS1 PE
Intent
Children develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident, and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance, and coordination. They master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching. Pupils participate in team games and perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Implementation
In Key Stage One, Physical Education is broken down into six main strands:
- Gymnastics
- Dance
- Games
- Athletics
- Fundamental Movement
- Outdoor Adventurous Activities
Each half term, children develop key skills and knowledge within a focussed strand. Children work through a Core Task Programme from Durham County Council or receive specialist coaching from our Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links.

Impact
By the end of Key Stage One most children:
Gymnastics
- Explore and develop the use of upper body strength, taking weight on flat hands and feet.
- Perform the caterpillar walk, bunny hop on the floor and along the bench.
- Explore shape in the air when jumping and landing with control and demonstrate control, of straight, star and tucked shapes.
Dance
- Become increasingly competent and confident in extending agility, balance and co-ordination, individually and with others in increasingly challenging situations.
- Move with appropriate actions (using simple movement patterns) in time to music, using ideas to sequence a short dance.
- Demonstrate good balance, which comes from an increasing awareness, control and strength in the core when bending, stretching, twisting and turning, on own and with a partner.
Games
- Play co-operatively and competitively with a team of three, use space well, controlling my body.
- Control and make decisions when playing with balls of various sizes and shapes.
- Adapt activities using own ideas of how to make the game easier/harder/more enjoyable, making up simple rules with others to make the game enjoyable and challenging.
- Recognise what I can do well and how I feel when I find activities easy/difficult or when I win/lose.
Athletics
- Describe different ways of running, explaining how to improve.
- Describe different ways of jumping, showing control at take-off and landing.
- Describe different ways of throwing, explaining how to improve.
Fundamental Movement
- Use a simple map and diagram to follow a trail, communicating effectively with others.
- Work with friends to select appropriate equipment.
